Preserve memories with care.

Only share photographs, recordings, writing or other material that you own, are permitted to share, or otherwise have the legal right to use.

An old photograph is not automatically free of copyright just because it is old. Family photographs, scanned prints, newspaper images, archive material and photographs copied from the internet may still belong to someone else.

If you are unsure who owns something, add only what you can responsibly verify or obtain permission to share.

Do not publish information that could expose another person to harm, unwanted contact or identity theft.

This includes private phone numbers, personal email addresses, home addresses, identity-document numbers, financial details, passwords, medical information or other sensitive personal information that should not be public.

Use Katha's location-privacy options when a memory can be preserved without revealing an exact place.

Never upload sexual, exploitative or abusive material involving a child or young person.

Be especially careful with names, school information, routines, exact locations and other details that could identify or expose a child unnecessarily.

A meaningful family memory can usually be preserved without publishing information that could put a child at risk.

Do not use Katha to harass, threaten, humiliate, stalk or target another person. Hate speech and abusive material directed at protected groups are not permitted.

Historical context can include difficult events and viewpoints, but preservation is not a licence to attack people.

Do not upload graphic violence, gore or shocking imagery merely to provoke or disturb people.

Some historically important material may require contextual treatment rather than automatic rejection. Katha may restrict, warn, review or remove such material depending on its nature and purpose.

Memories can be personal and imperfect. Do not knowingly impersonate another person, fabricate harmful allegations or deliberately present false information as fact in a way that could harm someone.

When something is uncertain, it is fine to say so. Phrases such as “as I remember it”, “our family believes”, or “the exact date is unknown” can preserve uncertainty honestly.

Do not upload a private recording if you do not have the right to share it. The same principles that apply to photographs and written stories also apply to voices and place sounds.

Publishing a Katha does not guarantee public distribution. Public Kathas may be reviewed before appearing in discovery.

Katha may restrict, flag, remove or otherwise moderate content that violates these guidelines, applicable law, the rights of others, or the safety of the community.

A reporting system is part of Katha's safety process so people can raise concerns about privacy, copyright, child safety, harassment, graphic material and other violations.
